KerrieALDO at the McManus Galleries
A while back I made a coat for the McManus Galleries in Dundee for part of their collection not knowing when it might be showcased and I am proud to say that it is now on display as part of their new exhibition which is called ‘This Just In’.
The exhibition features items they have acquired for their collection over the past 10 years. Their permanent collection started in 1869 and having lots of memories of visiting the museum as a child it is a bit surreal to now have one of my own designs that I have made amongst the varied range of items situated next a piece by Stella McCartney and in amongst other treasures of Dundee history. We popped along to see it in situ at the weekend and I loved visiting and seeing it in this iconic building.
The ‘This Just In’ exhibition runs until 20.10.24
If you are local to Dundee I am sure you will already know about the McManus but if you are not, it is a beautiful building in the heart of Dundee city centre and it has collections covering, art, archeology, history, world cultures and natural history. You can find out more information about the museum and it’s opening hours etc. here.
I was commissioned to make the coat in my ‘Original’ KerrieALDO style and it features a printed lining by textile designer MairiClaire who is a graduate of DOJ. The printed lining features Dundee landmarks with the intention of the printed design to trigger memories and conversation, particularly with dementia sufferers in mind. The coat was handcrafted in my studio (I was based in Leeds at the time of making this piece) and I used waxed cotton from Halley Stevensons of Dundee in dark green with contrast stitching to compliment the vibrant lining colour.
To coincide with the exhibition I was asked to stock a collection of my accessories designs within the museum shop, you can see a snippet of this below, there are 8 designs to choose from, some of which are not currently available online.
If you are planning a visit, I’d love to see your photos tagged or your thoughts on the exhibition!
Kerrie
